Following gun roundtable, Bhimani, Draeger renew attack on Bucco

Candidates, Assemblyman sparred over high-capacity magazines last week

Democratic Assembly candidates in the 25th legislative district repeated an attack on gun control aimed at Assemblyman Anthony Bucco Wednesday.

“People aren’t looking for political slogans, they’re looking for real change that will keep our children safe at school and for ten years Anthony Bucco has shown us that’s not something he can deliver,” Darcy Draeger said. “Anthony Bucco has kowtowed to his donors at the NRA and voted no every time it’s mattered most: from establishing gun-free zones at schools to banning high capacity magazines that have already claimed the lives of too many Americans. These weapons of war have no place in our communities and we demand better.”

On Friday, Draeger and her running mate, Lisa Bhimani, hit Bucco over his 87% rating from the National Rifle Association.

Bucco and the Democrats sparred over the assemblyman’s record on guns last week, with Bucco’s voting record on bills lowering the maximum magazine capacity from 15 rounds to 10 at the forefront of the partisan brawl.

The assemblyman defended his record, citing a handful of affirmative votes on gun control he made over the last year, though his voting record largely had him on the other side of the issue.

“Everywhere we go we hear from students who are afraid to go to school and people who feel like they’re not safe at their supermarket or in a movie theater. We can’t and won’t accept gun violence in our communities as the new normal,” said Bhimani. “There’s so much work that must be done. We’re honored to stand alongside Moms Demand Action, March for Our Lives, and concerned residents in this fight.”
